Taverna Mercatto is a lively Italian restaurant tucked just a few minutes’ walk from Union Station in downtown Toronto, making it an easy stop for both locals and visitors looking to unwind after work or before heading out on the town. The space strikes a balance between cozy and refined, with warm lighting and tasteful, understated décor that encourages lingering over a meal without feeling too stiff.

The atmosphere is comfortably vibrant without turning loud — perfect for casual dinners, small gatherings, or unwinding during happy hour. Speaking of which, the daily happy hour from 3 to 5 pm offers good deals on wine and half-price pizzas, drawing a crowd that appreciates approachable pricing without sacrificing quality. The crowd tends to be a mix of professionals and friends looking for a relaxed but polished setting.

The menu leans into classic Italian fare with a modern twist, offering dishes that highlight fresh ingredients and balanced flavors. Standouts include their Chitarra Carbonara and Wild Boar Gnocchi, while the selection of pizzas — like the Diavola and mushroom varieties — caters well to those who want something shareable yet distinct. Seafood options like Linguine Di Mare and smaller plates such as Fried Calamari add variety for lighter appetites or starters. For dessert, the Tiramisu and flourless chocolate cake have earned particular praise from guests who appreciate when sweets avoid being overly sweet and instead offer a satisfying finish.

The service here tends to be attentive and warm without being overbearing. Staff members are noted for their attentiveness, whether helping navigate the menu or accommodating larger groups, as seen in visits from families celebrating special occasions. The vibe supports a relaxed pace, giving diners room to enjoy both the food and conversation without rush.

Overall, Taverna Mercatto fits well for those in search of a welcoming Italian meal with quality ingredients in a setting that feels polished but approachable. It works nicely for weekday dinners, social drinks during the quieter early evening hours, or festive group celebrations, especially if you want to stay near the pulse of downtown Toronto.

I went to check out the Happy Hour at Taverna Mercatto which is 3-5pm daily. I was greeted quickly and seated. My server Sebastián was great and attentive. The $9 glasses of wine are a good deal and I enjoyed the Prosecco very much. I ordered a 1/2 price pizza which was very reasonable however it was a bit wet with too much sauce for me. Also the crust wasn’t my favourite. I would return to try some of their regular price appetizers and have another Prosecco.

I recently visited Taverna Mercatto with a friend, and it was a wonderful experience. The restaurant is in a great location near Union Station—just a quick three-minute walk, which was very convenient. The space itself is beautifully decorated, with a cozy yet elegant atmosphere that I immediately loved. The staff were very welcoming, and for drinks we tried the peach mocktail, which was light, refreshing, and the perfect start to our meal. For the main course, I had the Pollo Alla Diavola, and it was absolutely mouth-watering. The spicy chicken paired perfectly with the creamy fregola, pancetta, and kale—every bite was full of flavor. I finished the entire plate and would highly recommend this dish. My friend also ordered the Pollo Alla Diavola and enjoyed it just as much. To finish off, we shared the lemon tart for dessert, which was the perfect balance of sweet and tangy—so delicious and refreshing. Overall, I would highly recommend Taverna Mercatto for its convenient location, warm service, beautiful setting, and exceptional food.

Had an amazing late lunch at Taverna Mercatto! The vibe was spot on lively but not too loud, and the service was friendly and attentive. Everything we ordered was delicious, but the highlight came at the end when we were surprised with a free birthday dessert. Honestly, the desserts here are next level, easily some of the best we’ve had in a while. If you’re even slightly into sweets, don’t skip them. Can’t wait to go back.

Dinner at Taverna Mercatto I visited this restaurant after spending a bit of a night out and was immediately drawn in by how warm and inviting it looked from the street. The soft lighting, cozy design, and gentle background music created a relaxing atmosphere. It wasn’t too loud or crowded which made it perfect for an easy late dinner. I started with the Shrimp Salad which looked beautiful and fresh, but it was a bit too spicy for my taste. My server noticed and kindly offered to replace it with another dish at no charge, which I really appreciated. I switched to the Arctic Char and that dish completely made my night. The skin was perfectly crispy and cracked when I tapped it with my fork, and the fish underneath was soft and flaky. The sauce spread on the plate was delicious and I kept dipping each bite in it. The asparagus and other vegetables were cooked just right, still fresh and warm, and the dish smelled amazing. Everything about it felt light, flavorful, and comforting. It’s one of those meals that makes you slow down and really enjoy each bite. The service was attentive, the vibe was cozy, and the food felt fresh and thoughtfully made. I’d definitely come back to try another dish next time.
